One of the legends says that Sage Narada visited Mount Kailash to present a fruit of knowledge to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva decided to give it to his sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya (Murugan), whoever circled the world thrice first. Murugan embarked on his journey around the globe, while Ganesha, realizing the world symbolized his parents, circumambulated them. Pleased, Lord Shiva awarded the fruit to Ganesha. Murugan, upon returning, was upset and moved to Palani Hills in South India. In search of self-discovery, he entered into deep meditation atop the Palani hills.
