Ingredients Required To Make Dal Khichdi

  • 1 Cup Rice
  • 1/2 Cup Yellow Moong Dal
  • 1 Small Onion
  • 1 Small Tomato
  • 2 Garlic Cloves
  • 1 Green Chilli
  • 1 Inch Piece Of Ginger
  • 1 Tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1/2 Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 Tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Ghee As Required
  • Salt To Taste
  • Fresh Coriander Leaves

Directions To Make Dal Khichdi

  • In a bowl, add rice and dal together and rinse under running water. Do this till the water is completely clear. 
  • Next, soak dal and rice in water for about 20 minutes. 
  • Drain the water and keep the dal and rice aside. 
  • Chop onion, tomato, and coriander leaves. 
  • Split the green chilli into two and keep it aside.
  • In a pressure cooker, add ghee, mustard seeds, and cumin seeds. 
  • Add in chopped onion and saute till they turn pink. 
  • Mince garlic, grate ginger and add it to the cooker. 
  • Add the slit green chilli.
  • Drop in the chopped tomato and mix. 
  • Next, it is time to add the spices, turmeric powder, and salt. You can also add additional spices as per taste. 
  • Add in soaked rice and dal. 
  • Stir all the ingredients to ensure the masala coats the rice and dal.
  • Pour four cups of water into the cooker and bring to a boil.
  • Close the lid and pressure cook for about 25 to 30 minutes. 
  • Let the pressure release naturally and then open the lid. 
  • Adjust the consistency by adding water if required. 
  • Garnish the dal khichdi with fresh coriander leaves. 
  • Enjoy the dal khichdi hot with some papad, curd, or pickle. 

Tips To Make Delicious Dal Khichdi

  • Spices play a key role in making your dal khichdi tasty. If you don't like the regular dal khichdi flavour, add spices of your choice. You can add black pepper powder, red chilli powder, chaat masala, or khichdi masala to enhance the flavour of your dal khichdi.
  • While sauteing the masala, make sure the onion, tomato, ginger, and garlic are well-cooked. The masala adds great flavour to your khichdi. Add in the dal and rice only after these ingredients have turned soft.
