Living Root Bridges
This place attracts a lot of tourists and why not! This is a man-made natural wonder, which is known as the living root bridge. The members of the Khasi tribe have trained these roots of the ancient rubber trees in this way that they formed a bridge!
The Cleanest Village
Using that bridge above, people are able to go to this spic and span, scenic village called Mawlynnong. It was even named the "Cleanest Village in Asia" by a travel magazine. This place is a perfect example of community-based ecotourism. The locals have even constructed a Sky View platform using bamboo on the highest tree in the forest, which is nearly 80 feet up. It gives a bird's eye view of the beautiful village and you can also enjoy a panoramic view across to Bangladesh. This village is a 3-hour drive south of Shillong in the East Khasi Hills.

Dawki
About an hour away, on the east of Mawlynnong, in the West Jaintia Hills, the border town of Dawki is worth visiting. This place is breathtaking and the above picture is proof! There is no security either. Now what is amazing is that the International Radcliffe Line border between India and Bangladesh is situated there. The river is said to be amongst the cleanest rivers in the world.
Mawphlang Sacred Forest
Located a little less than an hour away from Shillong, Mawphlang is home to a sacred plant grove of the Khasi tribe. It has medicinal plants in abundance! But yes, tribe members also perform animal sacrifices and burn the bodies of their dead here. If you want to enjoy the nature then try the David Scott trail which stretches from Maphlang to Lad Mawphlang. This is a treehouse trail which is totally Instagrammable! The old horse trail actually dates back to the British era.
Laitlum Canyon
This is where you unwind. This is where you breathe in the fresh air and be pensive. When people visit this place, they often feel that they have reached the end of the world at Laitlum Canyon. It is just an hour away from Shillong. You can even enjoy a hike here, down a steep stairway to the village of Rasong. It is a remote village which completely relies on rustic cable pulley to transport food and other essential goods up and down the valley.
