Set almost 100 km from Pune is Junnar, a quaint town amidst lush greens and scenic landscapes. While the place is hailed for its archaeological significance across the country, not many are aware of its connection with the Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

On our recent expedition to Junnar in collaboration with Maharashtra Tourism, we got a chance to dig deeper and understand its historical connection with Shivaji Maharaj. On the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s 394th birth anniversary, we thought of taking you through the lesser-known birth story of the Maratha king.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's Connection With Junnar And Shivneri

CHATTRAPATI SHIVAJI SHIVNERI

"While Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is celebrated for his contribution to establishing the Maratha Empire, little do people know about his birth. He was born in the hill fort of Shivneri in Pune, Maharashtra in the year 1630," said Siddharth Kasbe, Archaeologist, and founder of Junnar Tourist Development Organisation.

Chhatrapati Shivaji’s Name After Shivneri’s Goddess

"Rani Jijabai gave birth to Shivaji Maharaj on 19th February 1630. Jijabai was a devotee of Maa Shivaai, a revered Goddess of Shivneri. Rani Jijabai used to visit the Shivaai Temple frequently to pray for a son. When Jijabai was expecting a child, she vowed that she would name her child after the Goddess. Thus the name 'Shivaji'," he added.

Among the many significant stops, we came across while trekking up the fort was the Shivai Temple. Devotees with folded hands and hopeful eyes queued up for 'darshan'. The temple still holds the centuries-old idol of Mata Shivai. Worshippers believe that prayers offered at the temple are always answered.

Every birth anniversary, a palana or cradle is beautifully decorated, palana geets (cradle songs) are sung and stories of the Indian ruler’s valour are narrated in the Maratha ruler's rememberance.

Two years after his birth, Shivaji Maharaj moved to Karnataka to his father Shahaji Bhonsale in Karanataka with his mother Rajmata Jijabai. He returned to Pune's Lal Mahal in 1642 where he received training in fighting and warfare. He received training in horse riding, archery, swordsmanship among others.

On turning 16, explored new territories and establish his first kingdom 'Torna' near Pune city. That was just the beginning and the rest is history.

Lamps are lit, and cultural programs are organised to honour the leader's legacy. The celebrations culminate with people carrying processions with colourful banners with Chhatrapati Shivaji's picture and notable quotes.

Many of Chhatrapati's contributions shaped the course of Indian history. He founded the Maratha Empire in the 17th century. With his innovative military strategies, he challenged many dominant empires like the Mughal and Adil Shahi. He continues to be remembered as the Father Of the Indian Navy for his contributions to safeguarding the coastal regions. His administrative reforms, and social welfare measures left a lasting impact on our country's history and culture.
